Persuasive Speech Assignment
Each student is responsible for presenting a 7-9- minute persuasive speech about a charity or
organization. The goal of this speech is to convince audience members to become involved with
this charity or organization. The organization or charity that you choose must be not-for-profit
and should have a connection to Las Vegas/Southern Nevada. The organization can be based in
Las Vegas/Southern Nevada, or it may have an office/location in our area—either of these
situations is acceptable. For example, the Ronald McDonald House Charities has as its target
population families of children who are sick/hospitalized. The organization is nation-wide, but it
has a “house” here in Las Vegas.
The specific content of your speech will depend upon the charity/organization that you choose
but you must address the following information regarding your charity or organization:
1. What is the mission/goal of the organization?
2. What population does it serve or what problem does it aim to solve? Be specific in discussing
specific programs, projects and services.
3. Why should we become involved with this charity or organization? How can we become
involved?
You must have a clear purpose statement and thesis, and you should be clear in
establishing your credibility. What experience do you have with this organization? What makes
you knowledgeable about it and its work? Be sure to include an attention-getter sentence (or
two or three) in which you make a case for the importance of this topic. You might wish to
provide an interesting fact or statistic, or to tell a story about someone who is impacted by this
organization.
This speech requires research. You need to incorporate research from a minimum of
five credible sources. You must include these sources as a list at the end of your speech outline
in a “Works Cited” page. You should adhere to APA style for your cited work.
In coming up with a charity or organization, think about your own interests as well as
those of audience members. There is a diverse group of students in class. How can you gain
their attention and keep them interested? Be creative in your approach and choose something
that you find interesting. The topic must be approved before you begin.
You will record your speech and turn in that recording, along with an outline. The
outline should follow the complete sentence format that we will utilize this semester and it
should follow the format that we discuss in class. Be sure your main points and sub-points are
clear, and that they are written in full sentences. At the beginning of your outline, include your
general-purpose statement, your specific purpose statement, your attention-getter, your
credibility statement, and your thesis statement. You must also include transition statements
between each new idea, as well as internal citations.
The persuasive speech is worth 205 points (5 points for submitting your speech topic on
time; 150 points for the presentation and 50 points for the outline). Due dates for this
assignment can be found in Canvas.
Power point, five sources.
Please follow the instructions very well.
