Mapping the Data by Creating a Choropleth Map
Aims
In this practical you will take on the role of a science reporter who writes for a well-regarded international journal. Your readers are members of the public in foreign cities who have little prior knowledge about the Liverpool population, the UK census, data, or mapmaking. However, they are certainly scholarly, and wish to learn more about the composition and distribution of populations in different cities around the world. They would like to understand some of the causes and consequences of these distribution patterns from the perspective of different groups within the population.
Your aim is to create a series of census maps of Liverpool to inform them about the population of the city. You will present them with a series of maps together with a written analysis that draws on the major patterns and trends you have found – both within the data, and from your own reading/understanding of the city’s geography. This will illustrate the important process of turning spatial data into information. Your maps will cover a variety of spatial extents and convey a key message to your readers based on conclusions that you think are interesting.
