Literary Theme Essay
Paper details: 1. Use significant evidence from at least one story. Paraphrase, summarize or quote accurately from the stories.
2. Make sure you have a specific thesis and guide to your essay.
3. Your body paragraphs should have a topic sentence, examples, and a closing.
4. Include a Works Cited page.
5. Your essay should be typed, 2-4 pages, MLA Format, size 12 font, and double spaced.
6. For this essay, use the 3rd person to present your ideas. State your ideas without “I think.” Your ideas are distinguished from other writer’s ideas by signal phrases and transitions.

One theme from the story “A&P” by John Updike could be that sexism was one of the main dividers in our society. A quote from the story that could be used to support this is when the manager of the store (Lengel) saw the girls shopping in bikinis and said, “We want you dressed decently when you come here(p.141)”. I believe that if a group of men were to come in there without a shirt on, then Lengel would not say anything. Additionally, Sami and his co worker Sokesie mocked the girls when they saw them in the store. After a few lines of mockery, Sammi claimed, “Stokesies married, with two babies chalked up on his fuselage already, but as far as I can tell that’s the only difference. He’s twenty-two and I was nineteen this April(p.139).”
