Art Criticism
Paper details: 1. There is controversy about whether the proper point of emphasis for understanding and evaluating art is (a) the characteristics of the art object itself, (b) the characteristics of the artist, or (c) the characteristics of the appreciator’s experience.
2. Compose a well-written, 1200–1500-word essay arguing in support of one of these positions. This essay should demonstrate a clear understanding of the course materials from Modules 10 and 11. Each of the three approaches to evaluating art should be described completely.
3. Make sure to identify the writer that you think best demonstrates each approach. Your own position should be stated clearly and defended with careful argumentation.
Note: You don’t have to conclude that only one of these positions is good or that they apply similarly to different kinds of art. Also, it is best to state your thesis — the claim you will support — early in the paper and then organize your paper to defend the thesis.
All you need to provide for references or citations from course readings is the author’s last name and the page number. You must provide full citations and a Works Cited page if you use outside sources.
In addition to the essay to be completed above, I will attach questions that do not need to be answered; however, the questions can help you write the essay.
