Hello Class,

I have chosen my current supervisor as my leader who behaves ethically. This leader displays honesty, fairness, and equity in his daily behaviors. One very good example of this ethical behavior occurred a few months ago when we were performing a jacking procedure at work. We were working in the paint/depaint hangar and as a result of the depainting chemicals the jackscrews became very hard to spin to the correct length. One employee who is known for having some anger issues was working on it when the supervisor came over to give some helpful advice. The advice was given in a way that was not condescending, but the employee took it the wrong way and got angry and out of control. The supervisor remained calm and tried to talk the employee out of acting in any way that could jeopardize his job. The supervisor could have easily written the employee up and got him time off from work, but he didn’t because he cares about his employees even when they get out of hand. Another good example comes from a week where we kept getting extremely difficult jobs and were having to stay over at the end of the shift to complete our work. Our supervisor knew that we had been working very hard and decided to buy us all dinner to thank us for our efforts.

I would describe this leadership style as transformational. Transformational leaders “inspire others to action through their personal values, vision, passion, and belief in and commitment to the mission ().” This individual is always engaging and has a positive can-do attitude. This supervisor on occasion will jump in and help us work if we need him, he leads by example and doesn’t just tell us what to do. I can remember one day we needed an extra person to remove rudders and without missing a beat our supervisor went and checked out a harness and assisted us in the removal of the rudders. This person is one who you want to work for, not just show up because you must. These are the reasons why I chose transformational leadership.

discussion 2-At my first assignment at Macdill AFB in Florida, we had a superintendent for our fuels shop that seemed to come out of an old recruiting ad for the Air Force. He was the senior enlisted leader (SEL) for our flight and it was apparent just upon meeting him that he was well versed in leadership and knew exactly what direction he wanted to take his shop and his people in. It became even more apparent when you saw how he would apply ethics within his leadership.

The first thing I’d like to point out in regards to this is that being an “ethical leader” doesn’t mean you get to make ethical decisions at work and unethical decisions after you’ve clocked out for the day. The SEL I’m speaking of showed this in his commitment to doing what was right even after duty hours. When we had a hurricane bearing down on the Tampa area, it kicked off a massive checklist we had all had to utilize in order to protect various facilities and assets. Typically, jobs such as sheltering equipment and inventorying supplies are left to the lower-ranking supervisors and enlisted. Our SEL came in on his day off in order to help us get these things accomplished so that the tasks would be done fastr and we could evacuate sooner to get out of the path of the storm.

Secondly, the aforementioned SEL refused to take unethical shortcuts for the sake of time. In our accounting process for the daily fuel inventories we have specific guidelines to follow along with locally made spreadsheets and other tools that we utilize. Our SEL would annually run an in-house audit and check both the account numbers on hand as well as the tools we utilized to make sure they are still accurate and had not been tampered with for the sake of ease.

Reflecting on these two events as well as the numerous others I could report, I would categorize his leadership style as transformational.

He utilizes the massive amount of charisma he carries to make those around him believe in the causes he fights for. I am of the belief that no leadership style is concrete, and that sometimes given the organization and the situation leadership styles have to shift. (I.E. the military only allows so much room for democratic leadership within the ranks). Having said that, I’ve seen this particular SEL encompass several leadership styles, but if I had to attach a single style to his leadership as a wholaqwe, it would be transformational.
