Technology’s impact on data security and ethics in data analytics

An enormous amount of data is generated and flowing through the business daily. Data analytics on this vast, collected data support the digital economy by identifying new opportunities and optimizing business performance. But at the same, there is various risk associated with security, privacy, and ethics. When data is not protected or misused, it can negatively impact privacy, impose restrictions on people’s personal identities, lead to bad decisions, and harm the company’s brand (BOSS Magazine, 2020). In recent years, cybercrime has increased exponentially, making online user information more vulnerable than ever. Faced with these risks, organizations of all sizes and purposes must commit to ethical data use while improving the security of their information systems (Fletcher, 2022). Innovation is improving people’s lives and changing the way businesses operate. Whiteside (2022) says that when cloud storage became available, hackers cheered because more valuable information was available on the internet, making their ‘jobs’ more accessible. All these recent technological advancements provide endless possibilities for hackers to connect and explore the inner workings of their users. User’s data will be an open book unless security layers match the capabilities of these hackers. With the advancement in technology, almost everything is digital, and hard copy information is less common. Most of the information is stored on a shared network, which helps the hacker access the network and obtains valuable information endangering individuals and businesses. (Bormida) 2021 says big data practices and techniques raise several ethical, social, and policy challenges, threats, and potential roadblocks. They are frequently interconnected, ranging from data ownership concerns to the digitalization of society to privacy confusion and the potential trade-off between privacy and data analytics progress. Thapa & Camtepe (2021) says that health data contain sensitive private patient information, including medical conditions and the caregiver’s information. All this data is used in sensing (e.g., electronic health monitoring devices), computations (e.g., machine learning), and communications (e.g., the interaction between the health data centers). Leakage of private information impacts one’s personal life, such as bullying, increased insurance premiums, and job loss due to medical history.

Examining the impact of technology on data security and ethics in data analytics

Data security is one of the rising issues troubling individual users and companies. It has become challenging to protect digital data and differentiate confidential and non-confidential data. With the advancements in technology, the world is becoming more vulnerable to cyber issues. Issues such as data breaches and identity theft are rising. Technology can influence the security of data and increase the risk in various ways. Firstly, social media platforms are increasingly used to violate privacy. As a greater number of people are sharing personal information, identities and other sensitive information are getting stolen. Similarly, incidents of targeted phishing are increasing every day. With the advancement of technology, phishing attempts have become more modern and sophisticated (Ramzan, 2010). Businesses and employees of the organizations are directly targeted. Similarly, botnets are increasingly emerging to conduct malicious attacks on systems. The purpose of botnets is to steal, pass and eventually sell the information.

Organizations adopted data analytics to make sense of the collected data. However, data analysts witness serious issues and challenges while handling data. A code of ethics has been established by organizations to encourage professionals to maintain a minimum professional standard while handling data. Firstly, data analysts are supposed to protect the customers of the organizations by safeguarding their personal data. Secondly, data governance is a critical component of data analytics (White & Ariyachandra, 2016). Data governance is important because data must be well-documented and training must be given to external and internal clients to ensure proper data protection. Again, transparency and accountability must be maintained. In other words, data analysts should be responsible while handling data. Testing and learning practices should be conducted to reduce the potential for errors. Emphasis should be given to making data-driven decisions.
